GFS LynnB:	giving us a talk on RESEARCHING FUNERAL HOME RECORDS.
GFS LynnB:	Please REMEMBER to hold your questions and comments until after he
GFS LynnB:	finishes speaking. When it is your turn, GFS Mark will call on you. Without
GFS LynnB:	further ado, I present.....GFS Mark!
GFS LynnB:	It's all yours, Mark!

GFS Mark:	Researching funeral home records is a much-neglected genealogical tool.
GFS Mark:	These seldom-tapped records can be a goldmine for the researcher, often
GFS Mark:	yielding information unobtainable elsewhere. First, we will look at what you can
GFS Mark:	expect to find in these records, and then we will discuss methods for gaining
GFS Mark:	access to them. One category of information in these records is the death
GFS Mark:	certificate data. Contrary to popular notion, the funeral director, not the doctor,
GFS Mark:	is the person responsible for initiating and filing the death certificate. So, in the
GFS Mark:	funeral home file will be much of the basic genealogical information about an

GFS Mark:	individual: full name, date and place of birth, date and place of death, marital
GFS Mark:	status at death, name of spouse (if living), name of father, full maiden name of
GFS Mark:	mother, place of residence at death, occupation, whether the person had
GFS Mark:	military service,
GFS Mark:	name and location of cemetery. In some cases, the parents' places of birth -at
GFS Mark:	least the state- will be included. Also listed will be the name, address and
GFS Mark:	relationship of the "informant", the person who supplied the information to the
GFS Mark:	funeral director. All states did not require death certificates until the second
GFS Mark:	decade of this century, so earlier funeral homes records will not yield as much
GFS Mark:	of this type information as more recent ones. There may be only an entry in a

GFS Mark:	daybook regarding the charge for the funeral! Even after death certificates
GFS Mark:	became required, compliance was spotty for a while, and many funeral directors
GFS Mark:	merely filled out a certificate form by hand and filed it with the health
GFS Mark:	department but failed to make a copy for the funeral home file. There is much
GFS Mark:	more to be found in the typical funeral file. The funeral direcor is also
GFS Mark:	responsible for placing obituaries in the news media, so the file will probably
GFS Mark:	have a list of the surviving immediate relatives: spouse, children, siblings,
GFS Mark:	parents. Sometimes the names of grandchildren, in-laws, and other relatives are
GFS Mark:	included. The city and state of residence of each of those listed is usually
GFS Mark:	noted. In addition, there is usually some biographical information: former

GFS Mark:	residences, educational institutions attended, employment, church affiliation,
GFS Mark:	military service, memberships in clubs, lodges and other organizations,
GFS Mark:	hobbies, civic endeavors, personal accomplishments, honors, etc. There may
GFS Mark:	even be mention of the individual's ancestors and perhaps siblings who had died
GFS Mark:	before this person. Even the person's date of marriage may be noted. There will
GFS Mark:	probably be a list of the newspapers in which the person's obituary appeared.
GFS Mark:	You can use this list to obtain copies of the actual obituaries. There is one
GFS Mark:	caution at this point: ALL of this information MAY be accurate, or it may be rife
GFS Mark:	with errors. It is only as reliable as the person who gave it. For that reason, you
GFS Mark:	should plan to use what you obtain from the funeral file as a guide to further

GFS Mark:	research. If possible, everything should be verified by documentary evidence
GFS Mark:	from official sources: birth certificates, marriage records, etc. In many cases,
GFS Mark:	the funeral home records will also contain copies of some or all of the following:
GFS Mark:	military service record, marriage certificate, birth certificate, insurance
GFS Mark:	policies, and last will and testament. There may also be details about the
GFS Mark:	location of the grave and the type of monument or marker there There may even
GFS Mark:	be a photograph of the person in the file! Other items, not necessarily
GFS Mark:	genealogical but interesting, are notes about the funeral services: officiating
GFS Mark:	minister, pallbearers, music, etc. Now that your appetite for these records is
GFS Mark:	sharpened, we come to the hard part: gaining access to funeral home

GFS Mark:	records. The most important thing to remember about funeral home records is
GFS Mark:	that they are PRIVATE records and the funeral home has NO obligation to
GFS Mark:	permit you to examine them. Your unexpected appearance at the funeral home
GFS Mark:	office demanding to see funeral records from decades ago would likely kill your
GFS Mark:	chances of EVER getting the information. Funeral homes are not in the archives
GFS Mark:	business, so older records are usually not readily available, IF they still exist at
GFS Mark:	all! Many funeral homes keep recent records in file folders in cabinets easily
GFS Mark:	accessible to the staff. These are usually kept alphabetically by year. Others
GFS Mark:	use bound funeral record books, in which the records are entered

GFS Mark:	chronologically, with pertinent papers kept separately.Seldom is an index
GFS Mark:	maintained, so knowing the year of death is usually required. Even when there
GFS Mark:	is an index, it may be incomplete due to clerical oversights in entering names
GFS Mark:	over the years. Practices vary among funeral homes, but usually older records
GFS Mark:	-after ten years or so- are placed in storage..in the attic, or basement, or
GFS Mark:	garage, often in no particular order .As a practical matter, they are then very
GFS Mark:	difficult to retrieve. In many cases, particularly with firms over a hundred years
GFS Mark:	old or that have changed ownership several times, the very old records have
GFS Mark:	either been destroyed or no one presently on the staff has any idea where they
GFS Mark:	are! I recently spoke with a fellow funeral director who is the current head of his

GFS Mark:	family's mortuary that has been under the same family's ownership since 1882.
GFS Mark:	He has NO records prior to 1945! During a move to a new location in the 1960s,
GFS Mark:	all the old records were thrown out! Another complicating factor is the funeral
GFS Mark:	director's reluctance to release information that might be sensitive. A family he
GFS Mark:	has served has entrusted him with some private information that they might not
GFS Mark:	want passed out to just anyone, so the funeral home might require approval from
GFS Mark:	the family before releasing anything to you. This is particularly true of records for
GFS Mark:	deaths occurring in recent years. In any case, you will probably not be allowed
GFS Mark:	to browse through the records; most likely, you will be required to ask for
GFS Mark:	specific information and a staff memebr will retrieve that for you from the file.

GFS Mark:	Since retrieving old records is not an everyday activity and is usually a bother
GFS Mark:	(dank basements, stuffy attics, dusty boxes), many staff members are not very
GFS Mark:	cooperative. This is especially so if the researcher shows up at an inconvenient
GFS Mark:	time. The best way to obtain information from these records is to write ( yes,
GFS Mark:	write) the manager of the funeral home, asking for specific information about a
GFS Mark:	specific individual. Enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope and offer to pay
GFS Mark:	for any copying expenses. While the manager might not do the actual search,
GFS Mark:	you can be reasonably sure that he or she will be receptive to your request and
GFS Mark:	will see that it is answered. You may hit it lucky and receive photocopies of
GFS Mark:	everything in the file. Unless there is a lot of material to copy, there will probably

GFS Mark:	be no charge for the copies. After all, the manager, perhaps more than anyone
GFS Mark:	else there, knows the public relations value of accommodating requests like
GFS Mark:	this. If you are personally acquainted with anyone on the funeral home staff, you
GFS Mark:	might be able to arrange a personal visit and, with luck, an opportunity to peruse
GFS Mark:	the files in which you are interested. Be forewarned, though, that you might wind
GFS Mark:	up with the job of organizing the old files! That could be a real pill! The founder
GFS Mark:	of my firm, which started back in 1905, kept records for years on the backs of
GFS Mark:	used envelopes; (times were hard back then.:) In cases where a firm has gone
GFS Mark:	out of business, the old records may have been taken in by another firm in town
GFS Mark:	or they may have been taken home by the owner and now rest in some relative's

GFS Mark:	attic. The local librarian or genealogical society may know who and where. In
GFS Mark:	many cases, old funeral homes records have been transcribed or microfilmed
GFS Mark:	and can be found in the local library. If you need to contact a funeral home in a
GFS Mark:	distant place, you can visit your local mortuary and ask to see its directory of
GFS Mark:	funeral homes. Every funeral home has at least one such directory, commonly
GFS Mark:	called "Red Book," "Blue Book," or "Yellow Book." These list every funeral
GFS Mark:	home in the United States, Canada and many foreign countries, with addresses
GFS Mark:	and telephone numbers. If you do not know the name of the funeral home which
GFS Mark:	handled the funeral, ask older relatives if they remember, refer to obituaries that
GFS Mark:	might have been clipped and kept, or inquire at the cemetery office, IF there is

GFS Mark:	an office and IF you know which cemetery. If you have obtained a copy of the
GFS Mark:	death certificate, you will find the funeral home noted on it. Where there are
GFS Mark:	several funeral homes in the town, you can narrow down the search by
GFS Mark:	determining which would have been in business at the time of the death. The
GFS Mark:	directories mentioned above contain ads from many of the listed funeral homes;
GFS Mark:	these often note the year the firm was founded. You can also ask one of the
GFS Mark:	funeral directors about which firms would have been in operation at the time.
GFS Mark:	There may have been ownership changes, and the firm you are seeking is still
GFS Mark:	operating, but under a different name. Most funeral directors are fairly
GFS Mark:	knowledgeable about the histories of the funeral homes in town and may be able

GFS Mark:	to help you determine which one you need to contact or be able to help you
GFS Mark:	locate the records if the firm no longer exists. If all this fails, you can always
GFS Mark:	inquire at every funeral home in town, hoping to score a hit at one of them.
GFS Mark:	Remember that most funeral directors are nice people and will respond favorably
GFS Mark:	to your request if you go about it in the right way.
GFS Mark:	Now...does anyone have a question?

WTHR1:	?
GFS Mark:	WTHR1, go ahead
GFS WillM:	Teresa, go ahead.
WTHR1:	What year did you say Funeral Homes usually began operation? I have a burned co from 1880's

Pak327:	!
WTHR1:	and I'm kind of stuck! wondering if Funeral Homes would go that far back!
GFS Mark:	there have been funeral homes around since the early 1800s
S 6 A:	!
SQUEEBOB:	?
WTHR1:	Great! Now I have to find the one out there! Thanks so much!!! ?GA
GFS Mark:	WTHR1: you'll have to inquire locally
GFS WillM:	Pak327, goahead
GFS Mark:	Pak327, go ahead
Pak327:	I found my birthmother this summer through an obituary of my grandfather

GFS Mark:	Pak327, that's great! you never know what you might find
GFS LynnB:	Queue: S 6 A !, SQUEEBOB ?
GFS WillM:	S 6 A, go ahead.
S 6 A:	I have dealt with funeral homes several times
S 6 A:	& they have been very helpful over the phone long distance
GFS WillM:	Squeebob, go ahead..
SQUEEBOB:	Catholic records for Catholic cemetarty in Ohio di
SQUEEBOB:	difficult
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, sometimes you run into that
Pak327:	?

GFS WillM:	Pak327, go ahead.
SQUEEBOB:	Catholics keep records not private funeral director
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, usually one or two mortuaries have predominantly Catholic clientele
Pak327:	I know on Compuserve there is a way to find phone #'s - is there a way on AOL?
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, but neither cemetery nor funeral home is REQUIRED to keep the records
GFS Mark:	Pak327, phone numbers of funeral homes?
Pak327:	no, just phone numbers of people you are searching for.
Pak327:	like if I had a name and a city & zip, I could punch that info. in and it would find the
SQUEEBOB:	!
Pak327:	phone number.

GFS Mark:	Pak327, no
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, go ahead
Pak327:	thanks
GFS WillM:	Squeebob, Go ahead
SQUEEBOB:	Palm Springs has done an index through Gen Soc
Chvlcadi:	?
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, many local societies and libraries have done that
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, go ahead
DMiller438:	Bye
GFS WillM:	Chvlcadi, go ahead.

SQUEEBOB:	also newspapers now list maiden name
Chvlcadi:	I am sorry, I got here late. Do funeral hms do there file more by name than date?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, they are usually filed alphabetically by year
Chvlcadi:	Okay, thanks. GA.
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, but it varies with the firm
Chvlcadi:	Okay.
GFS Mark:	anyone else?
SQUEEBOB:	?
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, go ahead
SQUEEBOB:	Just a comment my brekthrough came from funeral home in Renton WA

SQUEEBOB:	found out my Thomas family owned cemetary
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, many researchers never think of funeral homes for research
SQUEEBOB:	they provided me with original deed with six of my family names mustgo thanx
GFS Mark:	when sometimes that is the ONLY source for some info
GFS Mark:	anyone else?
GFS Mark:	Thank you very much... if you think of more questions, please email me :-)
Chvlcadi:	Can you answer a ? about access to old cemetaries?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, ask me
GFS LynnB:	Thanks, Mark! We always appreciate learning about new resources in researching!
Chvlcadi:	I know of the location of an old family cemetary, but it is on private land.

Chvlcadi:	I there any access law?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, contact the landowner for access
Chvlcadi:	"Is"
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, what state?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, most states prohibit destroying the cemetery...markers, etc.
Chvlcadi:	VA
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, owner of land controls access, but must allow it in most states
GFS WillM:	Anyone else have any comments or questions?
WTHR1:	Mark, why is this your last nite as late nite host?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, check at library for Virginia law on that

Chvlcadi:	Mark, Thank you, I will.
SKend24741:	?
GFS Mark:	WTHR1, I'll be explaining in amoment, Teresa
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, go ahead, Cuz
SKend24741:	What if the markers have already been moved
GFS WillM:	Chvlcadi, In West Virginia, it is a law that the cemetery have access. whether it's on priva
GFS WillM:	te property or not.
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, that's a sad situation..... happens a lot
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, depends upon how recent as to any remedy
SKend24741:	Our family cemetery in Sperryville VA it happened last summer

Chvlcadi:	WillM, Thanks, that is good to know. Some of the family is in WV (old VA).
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, but without a record, returning markers to correct spot impossible
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, is it on private property and who did it?
SKend24741:	Is it legal for the current landowner to remove them without contacting the descendants
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, not in Tennessee, probably not there
SKend24741:	I believe it was a private landowner
SKend24741:	Are there any remedies?
GFS Mark:	no matter, he is obligated to protect the cemetery
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, talk with an attorney about that,
GFS WillM:	Chvlcadi, it would be a good practice to get permission by private owner anyway. So you wont

GFS WillM:	buckshot by the mountaineer! <G>
SKend24741:	Does it have to be an active cemetery?
Chvlcadi:	WillM, Good Idea!
GFS Mark:	Everyone: there is a file in the Genealogy Library of my talk on cemetery research
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, no
Chvlcadi:	SKend, Has a member of your family tryed to see the cemetary?
SKend24741:	A cousin tried to find it last year, but couldn't
S 6 A:	WillM, do you have access to 1880 & 1900 census in Fredricktown, Madison Co MO?
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, ALWAYS go thru private landowner to access cemetery on private land
SKend24741:	It was 1.2 miles north of Sperryville,Rappahannock co,VA

GFS Mark:	SKend24741, see an attorney
SKend24741:	Thanks Mark, do you know any that practice in VA
Chvlcadi:	Mark, we tried to see them on our first visit, but they were out of the country. I plan to
GFS WillM:	Are there any questions or comments?
Chvlcadi:	try again after the winter. Too much snow!
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, ask your local attorney to recommend one
SKend24741:	Thanks.
WTHR1:	!
GFS WillM:	Teresa, go ahead
WTHR1:	SUPER JOB Mark!!!  {S clap}

WTHR1:	I never thought to check at funeral homes before!!!
GFS LynnB:	You are RIGHT, Teresa!
SKend24741:	?
S 6 A:	Yes, I agree, Teresa, SUPER JOB Mark. Now answer the question - why last nite?
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, ..........go ahead
GFS WillM:	SKend, go ahead.
SKend24741:	I have a burial record listing two people was that a common practice to bury two at once
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, yes, in some places
SKend24741:	in the same plot
GFS Mark:	yes. it's still done today in some places

Chvlcadi:	!
GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, go ahead
Gnosi:	?
SKend24741:	But the relationship of the two was not stated
GFS Mark:	SKend24741, may have died at same time, same incident
Chvlcadi:	I discovered that very fact in about a Brooklyn Cem. They also seem to only bury family
GFS WillM:	Chvlcadi, go ahead and then Gnosi.
SKend24741:	They both drowned in a flood
Gnosi:	!
Chvlcadi:	members, no other people. So it may give clues to other family members.

GFS Mark:	Chvlcadi, absolutely!
GFS WillM:	Gnosi, go ahead.
GFS WillM:	Any more questions or comments?
Gnosi:	Only family can bury family
SQUEEBOB:	can I assume that Conklins in Ohio next to Conklins in same Cemetary are related
GFS Mark:	SQUEEBOB, most likel;y
GFS Mark:	Thanks.... This is my last night with you, and I have a farewell address :-)
GFS Mark:	Tonight is a sad night for me because I am giving up hosting the LateNight
GFS Mark:	General Session.. this is my last night with you. I'm under doctor's orders to
GFS Mark:	get to bed earlier than will allow me to stay with LateNight being on so late in

GFS Mark:	my time zone. I wish I could continue with you but old codgers like me have to
GFS Mark:	careful. I want you to know that some of the best times of my life have been
GFS Mark:	right here online with you, my dear late night friends. My two cohosts, Lynn and
GFS Mark:	William, have been my close friends ever since I came on AOL almost a year
GFS Mark:	ago. Our working together has been wonderful; I could not ask for better
GFS Mark:	teammates. Lynn and William, I love you both. I'll miss working with you two
GFS Mark:	here. And all you wonderful LateNighters, I'll miss being with you in the best
GFS Mark:	chat session online anywhere! I'll still be online at other times and I'm sure
GFS Mark:	you'll see me around some. And..who knows? I might even sneak out some
GFS Mark:	night and pop in here to say howdy! :-) Before I go, though, I want to leave you
